“Nigerians living in Nigeria are in big trouble” — Lady cries out over fake products

A Nigerian lady has raised concerns over the widespread circulation of suspected fake and adulterated products in the country, saying Nigerians could be exposing themselves to health risks without knowing it.

In a video circulating on social media, the lady expressed worry over the possibility that many everyday products used by Nigerians may not be genuine.

She said the situation was particularly concerning because people could unknowingly use counterfeit products for basic activities such as brushing their teeth, bathing and preparing meals.

“As a Nigerian living in Nigeria, we’re in very big trouble. And the fact that you might not have any chronic illness or any health issue might have just been pure luck all along or just God’s grace,” she said.

According to her, the chances of Nigerians using more than 10 fake products are high, given the prevalence of counterfeit goods in the market.

She illustrated her concern by pointing to everyday household products, including toothpaste and bathing products, which she claimed could be counterfeit.

“You wake up and you want to brush your teeth and the toothpaste you are using is fake. You want to have your baths and you are using the dupe of the actual thing that you’re supposed to be using,” she said.

The lady also questioned the safety of ingredients contained in some products, saying consumers might have little knowledge of what they are actually putting into their bodies.

Turning to food products, she alleged that some cooking ingredients sold to Nigerians may also contain substances that do not reflect their original composition.

“You want to cook your food, the farm oil that you are using is half colouring, half the actual thing,” she said.

She similarly raised concerns about tomato products and other ingredients used in preparing popular meals such as Jollof rice and noodles.

The lady further questioned whether even people who deliberately maintain healthy lifestyles and choose fresh or organic foods could completely avoid questionable products.

She cited ginger and garlic as examples, saying: “The ginger is not gingery like it used to ginger. Garlics are not garlicy like they used to garlic.”

She also expressed frustration over what she described as the lack of effective action against the circulation of questionable products.

The lady referenced a video involving the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), saying she had seen a clip in which the agency’s head was laughing after being challenged to resign over her performance.

“I even saw the video of the child lady of Navdak laughing hysterically,” she said, apparently referring to the NAFDAC director-general.

She concluded by admitting that her comments were largely an expression of frustration over a situation she felt powerless to change.

“It’s just so sad. I don’t know. I think this rant is just to make me myself feel better because I have no power whatsoever to do anything about the situation,” she said.

The lady ended by expressing hope that Nigerians would live long and remain healthy.

“I just hope and pray that we live long. I mean, at least we will live long in good health and in wealth,” she added.
