Nigeria’s national grid reportedly experienced its first failure of 2025 just ten days into the new year, sparking fears of a potential nationwide blackout.

However, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims of a national grid collapse, clarifying that the reported incident was a temporary disruption in power transmission, not a system failure.
In an official statement addressing public concerns, TCN reassured Nigerians that the grid remains stable and fully operational.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, explained that the disruption originated when the Benin-Omotosho transmission line tripped at 1:41 PM, following an earlier tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor line.
These events primarily affected bulk power supply to Lagos and surrounding areas.
Mbah stressed that the incident did not constitute a grid collapse. “At 1:00 PM, total power generation was 4,335.63 MW, and even after the event, 2,573.23 MW remained available. The grid was never compromised,” she stated.
The power supply to key stations, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras, was briefly impacted.
However, TCN confirmed that most stations have since been restored, with the exception of the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, where engineers are actively working to resolve the issue.
Amid reports of a grid collapse, TCN criticized the spread of false information and urged the public to verify facts before sharing unverified claims.
The company emphasized its commitment to transparency and to enhancing Nigeria’s power transmission infrastructure.
“The public should confirm facts before disseminating misinformation,” the statement reiterated.
