MLS: Wayne Rooney leaves DC United, admits “I’ve got nothing figured out”

Former Manchester United star and legend Wayne Rooney has parted ways with Major League Soccer team DC United.

The club confirmed this in a statement, describing it as a mutual decision between the player and the club.

Rooney’s departure from the Major League Soccer side marks the end of his 15 months period with the team.

Despite securing a 2-0 victory over New York City FC on Saturday, DC United failed to qualify for the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

The club’s CEO and Co-Chairman, Jason Levien, explained the decision, saying, “We have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time.”

Levien also said the decision is important for the club’s future, to allow the side General Manager to “establish a new philosophy and structure, onto our sporting operations, which begins with the critical identification of a Head Coach who will best align with this.”

The club’s CEO also appreciated Rooney for his time with the club, pledging he remains an “important part of the D.C. United family and a valued and cherished friend.

Reflecting on his time with DC United, Rooney said, “It’s the right time. I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the playoffs. It’s not a single thing that’s happened. It’s about timing.”

He remained open-minded about his next move, saying, “What lies ahead, I don’t know. I’ve seen a lot of reports in the media. I’m going back with nothing lined up.”

Rooney’s departure from DC United comes after his previous job at Derby County before joining the MLS team in July 2022.
