Man United ready to make Fernandes club’s highest-paid player

Manchester United are preparing a new contract for Bruno Fernandes that would make the captain the highest-paid player at the club.

Fernandes has strengthened his case for improved terms after collecting the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award before scoring a hat-trick in United’s 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town.

The 31-year-old currently earns around £300,000 a week, but United are considering increasing his salary to approximately £350,000 per week.

United prepare improved deal for captain

Fernandes’ current contract runs until next summer, although United have the option to extend it by another year.

The proposed agreement is expected to add another year to his existing terms while significantly increasing his salary.

United have previously rewarded Fernandes with improved wages when extending his contract in 2022 and 2024, although each renewal only added a year to the expiry date.

The latest proposal would reflect his importance to Michael Carrick’s team and his contribution during the 2025-26 campaign.

Fernandes won the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award and claimed the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year prize for a record fifth time.

He also broke the Premier League record for assists in a single season as United finished third and secured Champions League football.

Fernandes’ future remains a priority

United’s decision comes after a period of uncertainty over Fernandes’ future.

The club were prepared to accept an £80m offer from Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr last year, but Ruben Amorim opposed his departure.

Fernandes also revealed last November that he could consider returning to Portugal or moving to Italy later in his career, comments that came as his contract situation continued to attract attention.

United have since adopted a stricter wage structure but recognise that their captain deserves a package reflecting his status within the squad.

Marcus Rashford currently has the club’s highest reported salary at £325,000 a week, although he spent the past 18 months on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Fernandes has scored 110 goals in 329 appearances since joining United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020.

His latest hat-trick against Ipswich took his tally to another level as United secured their first league victory of the season.
