Fernandes hat-trick fires Man United to first win of season

Manchester United secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a comfortable 5-2 win over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Bruno Fernandes was the star of the afternoon, scoring a hat-trick and setting up Bryan Mbeumo as Michael Carrick’s side recovered from an early setback to claim all three points.

Ipswich stun United early

United were caught cold in the first half when Ipswich took the lead through Leif Davis.

Abdul Fatawu created the opening after beating Luke Shaw before delivering a dangerous cross for Davis, who struck a powerful effort that went in off the crossbar.

The goal briefly unsettled the hosts, but Fernandes restored parity shortly before half-time. The United captain ran through on goal before keeping his composure to finish and level the contest.

Fernandes completes memorable treble

United carried their momentum into the second half and went ahead when Harry Maguire’s effort took a deflection off Jacob Greaves before finding the net.

Fernandes then extended the advantage from the penalty spot before completing his hat-trick moments later.

The Portuguese midfielder reacted quickest after Mbeumo’s effort was blocked, tapping home to put United 4-1 ahead.

Fernandes then turned provider for United’s fifth. He played Mbeumo through, with the forward producing a composed lob over Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.

Ipswich managed to add a second late in the game through substitute Chuba Akpom, but there was no prospect of a comeback.

The victory gives Carrick his first Premier League win of the campaign and provides United with a significant boost after their difficult start.
