Maduka Okoye’s late Super Eagles arrival raises questions after spotted with Cardi B
Maduka Okoye’s delayed arrival at the Super Eagles camp has attracted attention after the goalkeeper was spotted with American rapper Cardi B shortly before Nigeria’s opening AFCON 2027 qualifier.
Okoye was the only member of Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad yet to join the team after the other 23 players reported and took part in their first training session in Ikot-Ekpene.

The Udinese goalkeeper was expected to be part of Nigeria’s preparations for Friday’s meeting with Madagascar after earning another call-up on the back of his performances against Poland and Portugal in June.
Okoye spotted with Cardi B
The 27-year-old was filmed speaking with Cardi B on Tuesday night, with the pair appearing to share a relaxed conversation and laugh together.
The footage quickly circulated on social media, prompting criticism from some Nigerian supporters and journalists over Okoye’s absence from the national team camp.
It is not the first time the goalkeeper has been seen with the Grammy-winning rapper. The pair have been spotted together on several occasions in recent months, including during dinners and conversations.
Their appearances have led to speculation about the nature of their relationship, although neither Okoye nor Cardi B has publicly confirmed that they are romantically involved.
The latest sighting came while the Super Eagles were already in camp preparing for their crucial qualifying fixture.
Nwabali set for return
Okoye’s delayed arrival could have consequences for his position in the team, particularly with Stanley Nwabali back in the squad.
Nwabali was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and returned to the national team after regaining regular playing time with Chippa United.
His return provides Chelle with an experienced option ahead of Friday’s fixture, while Arthur Okonkwo is also available after establishing himself as another contender for the position.
Okoye had appeared to move ahead of Nwabali during the latter’s absence, starting Nigeria’s June friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
However, with Nwabali now back and Okoye’s late arrival leaving his availability for Friday uncertain, the Chippa United goalkeeper could be handed the opportunity to reclaim the starting spot.
Nigeria face Madagascar on Friday before meeting Guinea-Bissau on September 29 in their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
