Lookman goal sends Atletico past Barcelona into Champions League semi-final

Atletico Madrid held firm to secure a 3-2 aggregate win over FC Barcelona and book a place in the Champions League semi-finals, despite a 2-1 second-leg defeat in Madrid.

Barcelona, trailing 2-0 from the first leg, made a fast start. Lamine Yamal reduced the deficit inside five minutes, capitalising on a defensive lapse to finish past Juan Musso.

The visitors then levelled the tie in the 24th minute when Ferran Torres drilled home from a Dani Olmo assist.

Lookman restores control for Atletico

Atletico responded quickly to regain their aggregate advantage. Marcos Llorente broke down the right flank and delivered a precise cross for Ademola Lookman, who finished calmly to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

Barcelona had earlier missed a key opportunity to take full control, with Fermín López denied by Musso in a one-on-one situation. That moment proved costly as Atletico executed their transition-based approach with efficiency.

Barca push falls short amid red card setback

The second half saw Barcelona continue to press, and Torres thought he had added a third when he volleyed home, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Their task became more difficult when Eric García was sent off for bringing down Alexander Sørloth as the striker raced through on goal.

Despite late pressure, including efforts from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araújo, Barcelona could not find the goal required to force extra time.

Simeone’s plan delivers under pressure

Under Diego Simeone, Atletico maintained composure despite early setbacks. The hosts relied on defensive organisation and quick counter-attacks, with Lookman’s goal ultimately separating the sides over two legs.

The result sends Atletico into the semi-finals, where they will face either Arsenal or Sporting CP, as they continue their pursuit of a first Champions League title.
