Liverpool edge Everton in tense Merseyside derby clash

Liverpool claimed bragging rights in the Merseyside derby after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Everton at Anfield on Saturday.

Goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike proved decisive, with the Reds holding off a late surge from their city rivals.

The win extends Liverpool’s strong start to the Premier League campaign, while Everton were left to rue missed opportunities despite strong showing in the second half.

Gravenberch strikes early

Arne Slot’s side wasted no time taking control of the game in the opening minutes, with early pressure that saw Mohamed Salah provide a lob ball for Gravenberch, who finished calmly past Jordan Pickford.

Ekitike doubles the advantage

Liverpool continued to dominate possession and were rewarded again in the 29th minute.

Gravenberch turned provider this time, playing through a pocket pass to summer signing Hugo Ekitike, who coolly scored to make it 2-0.

Everton fight back late

Despite Liverpool’s control, Everton returned after the break with a fight.

David Moyes’s side found a lifeline when Idrissa Gana Gueye unleashed a stunning strike that left Alisson with no chance.

The goal raised hopes for the visiting fans, but efforts for an equalizer failed, leaving Liverpool with five wins in their five opening Premier League games this season.
