A Nigerian undergraduate student has taken to social media to share her painful experience after a lecturer allegedly seized her phone in class and demanded money before returning it.

In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the lady, who said she is a 300-level student, explained that the incident occurred during a lecture when she briefly picked up her phone.

According to her, she was not pressing her phone but only tried to silence it immediately the lecturer entered the class.

However, the lecturer allegedly assumed she was using the phone and seized it on the spot.

After the lecture ended, she waited behind to explain herself and apologise, insisting she was only silencing the phone.

She said the lecturer refused to listen and instead told her she would have to pay before getting her phone back.

The situation reportedly became more humiliating when she pleaded repeatedly and even knelt down in front of her fellow final-year students, yet the lecturer remained unmoved.

She claimed the lecturer demanded ₦10,000 before he would return the phone.

“I pleaded, I even had to kneel in front of all the final year students. He refused and said I was going to pay ₦10,000. I came back with ₦5,000 cash, he refused. I had to add another ₦5,000 before he gave me my phone.”

The lady expressed shock at the situation, questioning when it became acceptable for lecturers to seize students’ phones and demand money before returning them.

Her story has since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians calling on the school authorities to look into the situation.
