La Liga: Ter Stegen signs new contract with Barcelona

La Liga giants, Barcelona have announced that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has signed a new contract that will run till June 2028.

ESPN had reported earlier that new terms in the contract will see the Germany international defer a substantial part of his wage until further down the line to help the club create salary space for the season.

Ter Stegen’s previous deal was due to expire in two years but he has agreed to extend his time with the La Liga giants.

Barcelona said in a statement on Friday, August 25, that the release clause in the goalkeeper’s new contract has been fixed at €500 million ($540.4m).

It read’

“FC Barcelona and the player Marc ter Stegen have reached an agreement to renew his contract until June 30, 2028. The termination clause is set at 500 million euros.

“The renewal ceremony of the second Blaugrana captain took place this Friday at the Spotify Camp Nou offices, with the presence of the president Joan Laporta, the first vice-president, Rafa Yuste, the economic vice-president, Eduard Romeu, the manager Joan Soler, and sports director Anderson Luis de Souza ‘Deco’.”

Commenting on the new contract with Barcelona, 31-year-old Ter Stegen said;

“I am very happy. In the end, it’s five more years, with a lot of enthusiasm and we hope that the five years will be full of happiness and many titles.

“It is a mixture of many things. We like the city, we like the club and the people treat us with a lot of respect. We are very happy and that’s why the renewal is a consequence.”

Ter Stegen, who is Barca’s first-choice goalkeeper, is in his 10th season with the Catalan outfit after joining in 2014 from Borussia Monchengladbach.

He has made 379 appearances for the club, winning 15 trophies, including five La Liga titles, five Copas del Rey, and one Champions League. He was crucial in helping Barca win the La Liga last season.
