La Liga: Akor Adams scores again as Sevilla beat Athletic Club

Akor Adams continued his fine run of form in La Liga, scoring for the second straight match as Sevilla came from behind to defeat Athletic Club 2-1 on Saturday.

The Super Eagles striker, who netted a late brace off the bench in Sevilla’s previous outing, was handed a start and proved decisive as Matías Almeyda’s side ended a four-game winless run in the league.

First-half response after early setback

Athletic Club took the lead five minutes before the break when Robert Navarro finished from close range to put the visitors ahead.

Sevilla responded almost immediately, with Gerard Fernández finding the net two minutes later to restore parity before half-time.

Adams delivers from the spot

The hosts completed the turnaround early in the second half. Ten minutes after the restart, Sevilla were awarded a penalty following a VAR review after Yuri Berchiche was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box.

Adams stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom corner to give Sevilla the lead.

Sevilla hold firm, move up the table

Athletic Club pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages but Sevilla defended resolutely to see out the win, condemning the visitors to their seventh away defeat in 11 league matches this season.

The result lifts Sevilla above Athletic Club into 11th place. Both sides are level on 24 points after 21 matches, but Sevilla hold the advantage on goal difference and now sit five points clear of the relegation zone.

Sevilla will look to build on the victory when they travel to face Mallorca on Monday, February 2, while Athletic Club turn their focus to European action as they prepare to host Sporting CP in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Adams’ goal takes his La Liga tally for the season to six, marking his most productive league campaign since the 2023-24 season, when he scored eight goals for Montpellier.
