Kamada rescues Japan as Netherlands held in World Cup opener

Japan fought back twice to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in an entertaining Group stage clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Dallas.
Daichi Kamada’s late goal ensured the Samurai Blue left with a point after Ronald Koeman’s side had twice taken the lead in one of the most highly anticipated fixtures of the opening round.
The result leaves both teams with work to do in their remaining group matches but underlined Japan’s reputation as one of the tournament’s most resilient sides.
Dutch lead twice in thrilling contest
The Netherlands created the better chances during a cautious first half, with Donyell Malen repeatedly testing Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Their pressure finally paid off six minutes after the restart when captain Virgil van Dijk rose highest to head home a cross from Ryan Gravenberch.

Japan responded quickly. Keito Nakamura brought his side level in the 57th minute with a powerful low strike that slipped past goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The Dutch regained the advantage after 64 minutes through Crysencio Summerville. The winger cut inside before firing a low effort beyond Suzuki to make it 2-1.
Late Kamada header earns Japan a point
Despite falling behind for a second time, Japan continued to push forward in search of another equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in the 88th minute when Kamada cleverly redirected Koki Ogawa’s effort into the net with a deft header to spark celebrations among the large contingent of Japanese supporters in Dallas.
The late goal capped an impressive comeback from Japan, who matched the Netherlands for determination and intensity throughout the contest.
While the Dutch will be disappointed not to hold on for all three points, Japan will take confidence from a performance that demonstrated strong fighting spirit against one of Europe’s traditional heavyweights.
