Julian Alvarez clears air on future, demands Atletico exit amid Barcelona interest

Argentina forward Julián Álvarez has publicly expressed his desire to leave Atlético Madrid, declaring that a transfer would be “the best thing for everyone” as speculation intensifies over a potential move to FC Barcelona.

The 26-year-old striker made his feelings clear after helping Argentina secure a 2-0 victory over Austria at the World Cup, fueling reports that Barcelona are leading the race for his signature.

Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024 and has become a key player under coach Diego Simeone. However, the forward now appears ready for a new challenge.

Alvarez breaks silence on future

Speaking after Argentina’s latest World Cup outing, Álvarez admitted he has already held discussions with Atlético officials regarding his future.

 

“I don’t think it’s the right moment to talk, but I also don’t want to hide. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with the people at [Atletico] who I needed to speak with. I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream.”

The comments are likely to increase uncertainty around the striker’s future, particularly as Barcelona search for a long-term replacement for veteran forward Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona are reportedly prioritising Álvarez as they reshape their attack ahead of the new season.

Despite the player’s desire to leave, Atlético remain in a strong negotiating position. Álvarez is contracted until 2030, meaning the Madrid club are under no pressure to sell unless their valuation is met.
