Italy recall Kayode as Nigeria’s hopes fade

Italy have handed a late call-up to Michael Kayode, a development that increases uncertainty over his potential switch to the Nigeria national team.

The Brentford full-back was added to Italy’s Under-21 squad after initially being left out, with manager Silvio Baldini describing the earlier omission as a “purely technical choice.”

Following internal clarification, Kayode was asked to report to camp in Tirrenia, marking a quick reversal.

Italy focus remains firm

Despite being overlooked by senior coach Gennaro Gattuso for World Cup play-off fixtures, Kayode has made his stance clear, his ambition is to represent Italy at senior level.

That position significantly weakens Nigeria’s recruitment outlook, even as Eric Chelle continues to monitor dual-national prospects.

From a performance standpoint, Kayode’s case is strong. The 21-year-old has delivered consistent performances in the Premier League, combining defensive stability with attacking output – key metrics that align with modern full-back requirements.

A broader recruitment challenge

Kayode’s situation mirrors that of Honest Ahanor, who has also committed to Italy’s youth setup despite eligibility for Nigeria.

According to Afrik-Foot, the Atalanta prospect has reportedly declined overtures from the Nigeria Football Federation.
