INEC announces integration of AI into 2027 election result verification process

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its election result verification process ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed this in a video circulating on social media, saying the commission has established a dedicated AI division within its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department.

The development comes as INEC prepares for the 2027 elections, with the commission’s official calendar listing the Presidential and National Assembly election for January 2027.

AI to support result verification

According to Amupitan, INEC has integrated automated AI auditing tools into its result verification process under a five-pillar AI governance framework.

He stressed that the use of AI would operate under mandatory human oversight, indicating that the technology would support the electoral process rather than independently make electoral decisions.

“The commission has established a dedicated artificial intelligence division within the ICT departments.

“Automated AI auditing tools have been integrated into our result verification process under a five-pillar AI governance framework operating under mandatory human oversight.”

AI governance policy being finalised

The INEC chairman also disclosed that the commission was finalising an AI governance framework policy to guide the use of the technology.

He said the commission was working with international technology leaders and partners as it develops AI-driven tools for the 2027 electoral process.

Technology to detect anomalies and cyber threats

Amupitan said the AI tools would also be used to detect anomalies in INEC’s systems and monitor database traffic.

He added that the technology would help protect the commission’s public portals from cyber intrusions and unauthorised alterations.

“In partnership with international technology leaders and partners, we’re integrating our AI-driven anomaly detection tools to monitor database traffic and shield our public portals against cyber intrusions or unauthorised alterations.”

The latest development forms part of INEC’s broader plan to deepen the use of technology ahead of the 2027 general election, which the commission has said will require strengthened technological safeguards and operational processes.
