“I told him consultation is ₦10k” — Lady shares how rent hike changed things with her landlord

A medical professional has stirred debate online after recounting a disagreement with her landlord over service charges following a steep rent increase.
Rent hike triggers professional boundary
The woman, who said she has lived in the same compound since 2021, explained that her landlord doubled her rent by 100 percent in December 2025, significantly affecting her finances.
Prior to the increase, she claimed she had consistently provided free medical advice and informal treatment to the landlord, his family, and associates whenever needed.
“My landlord increased my rent by 100% last December. I’ve been in this compound since 2021. As a medical personnel, I’ve always helped him, his family and even their friends for free whenever they had any health concerns,” she said.
Consultation fee sparks fallout
The situation escalated when the landlord reportedly reached out again for medical help, but this time she requested a consultation fee. Her response, she said, was driven by the need to meet her rising living costs.
“This morning, he messaged me about a medical issue. I told him consultation is ₦10k. He called, shocked, asking when I started charging. I told him I need money to pay the new rent, so I can’t keep doing it for free. He got angry and ended the call. Abeg, did I do anything wrong?” she added.
The incident reflects a growing trend across Nigeria, where rising rent costs since late 2024 have forced tenants to reassess informal support systems and set clearer professional boundaries.
