“I just wanted to feel needed” — Lady’s relationship ends after she repays ₦300,000 borrowed from boyfriend

A young woman’s relationship reportedly took an unexpected turn after she repaid the ₦300,000 she had borrowed from her boyfriend to settle her school fees.

According to an account shared by her cousin, the woman had promised to return the money within two months and began saving towards the repayment. She reportedly reduced outings and unnecessary spending until she had raised the full amount.

Excited about clearing the debt, she transferred the ₦300,000 to her boyfriend and called to inform him.

He reportedly asked, “So you’ve paid me back?”

She responded, “Yes, babe. I told you I would.”

Boyfriend complains she has become too independent

Three days after the repayment, the boyfriend allegedly sent her a lengthy message accusing her of changing, becoming too independent and no longer appreciating him.

The woman was reportedly confused by the accusation because she believed nothing else about their relationship had changed.

The situation took another turn when one of her friends allegedly revealed that the boyfriend had been telling people she was using him for money.

When confronted about his behaviour, the boyfriend reportedly said, “I just wanted to feel needed.”

She replied, “You were needed. But I’m not going to stay broke just to make you feel important.”

Couple ends relationship weeks later

The couple eventually broke up about two weeks after the confrontation, bringing the relationship to an end despite the boyfriend reportedly being the person who initially encouraged her to return to school.

The account has highlighted the complicated role that money, financial dependence and feelings of being needed can sometimes play in romantic relationships.
