Huijsen red card deals blow to Mourinho’s side as Atletico win Real Madrid in derby

Real Madrid were dealt a major setback in their Sunday derby clash against Atletico Madrid, losing 2-1 to drop to fourth.

The Spanish giants lost the game early in the second. It started with Dean Huijsen’s red card just after the restart in the 49th minutes, and Atletico Madrid converted the resulting penalty.

Hancko delivered a cross into the box and Giuliano reached the ball ahead of Huijsen.

The Real Madrid defender brought down the Atletico forward while attempting to deal with the danger, prompting referee Ortiz Arias to point to the spot.

VAR changes Huijsen’s punishment

Ortiz Arias initially showed Huijsen a yellow card, but VAR intervened to review the incident.

After checking the pitchside monitor, the referee overturned the original decision and produced a straight red card, leaving Real Madrid with 10 men for the remainder of the match.

The dismissal came at a particularly damaging moment for Jose Mourinho’s side, who now faced the rest of the derby a player down.

Grimaldo converts from the spot

Atletico made their numerical advantage count immediately.

Grimaldo stepped up to take the penalty and calmly converted, putting Atletico ahead just minutes into the second half.

The goal compounded Real Madrid’s problems and left them facing the difficult task of overturning the deficit while playing with 10 men.

What had already been a fiercely contested Madrid derby had suddenly shifted heavily in Atletico’s favour following Huijsen’s dismissal and Grimaldo’s successful spot-kick.

Real Madrid lose derby after pulling one back

Atletico needed only six minutes to add to their tally, taking away the game from their fierce visitors.

Antonio Rudiger pulled one back for the Real Madrid just before full time, but it was nothing but a consolation for the visitors.

The defeat leaves Real Madrid in the fourth position with 15 points in seven La Liga games, while Atletico Madrid moved second with one point more.
