EPL: Cunha rescues Man United with late equaliser against Fulham

Matheus Cunha struck with a minute of normal time remaining as Manchester United fought back to draw 1-1 with Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Michael Carrick’s side appeared set for a third consecutive defeat after Lisandro Martinez’s bizarre own goal gave Fulham the lead.

However, Cunha’s late effort took a huge deflection off David Affengruber and wrong-footed Bernd Leno before finding the bottom corner.

The result prevented United from suffering another defeat in what has been a difficult week for the club.

Leno keeps Fulham in front

Fulham had goalkeeper Leno to thank for keeping them ahead for much of the match.

The German produced several important saves as United pushed for an equaliser, with the visitors repeatedly threatening to break through.

Fulham had looked on course to claim their first Premier League victory of the season after Martinez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

United continued to press as time ran down, but Leno’s interventions appeared to be enough to secure all three points for the hosts.

Cunha strikes at the death

With just one minute left in normal time, Cunha found space around 20 yards from goal and unleashed a shot towards the corner.

Affengruber’s attempted block proved decisive as the ball changed direction sharply, leaving Leno stranded and giving United a much-needed equaliser.

The draw means United avoided losing three matches in the space of a week, but they head into the international break 12th in the Premier League with five points from their opening five games.

Fulham remain without a league win and sit 19th with two points from five matches.
