Haaland release clause revelation raises questions over Man City future

Erling Haaland reportedly does not have a relegation release clause in his Manchester City contract, raising questions over the futures of the club’s star players amid the ongoing financial case.

The Norwegian striker signed a remarkable nine-and-a-half-year deal in January 2025, keeping him at the Etihad until 2034. The contract is reportedly worth around £260 million, with Haaland believed to earn a basic salary of approximately £500,000 per week.

The revelation comes as Manchester City continue to face uncertainty over the outcome of the Premier League’s case concerning alleged financial rule breaches.

Haaland tied to City until 2034

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Haaland’s contract does not contain a clause allowing him to automatically leave if City are relegated from the Premier League.

That could give City significant leverage over their prized striker if the club were eventually demoted. However, a potential move outside the Premier League could still create pressure on the champions to negotiate with Haaland or other members of their squad.

City were charged in February 2023 following a four-year investigation into alleged breaches dating from 2009 to 2018.

The charges include allegations relating to financial information, player and manager remuneration, Profitability and Sustainability Rules and UEFA regulations, while the club was also accused of failing to cooperate with the investigation.

City maintain their position

Sanctions have not been determined, and the process remains ongoing. Potential punishments discussed publicly have included fines, points deductions, relegation and the stripping of titles.

Several Premier League clubs have also reportedly considered taking legal advice over possible compensation claims, although any consequences will depend on the final outcome of the process.

Manchester City have consistently denied wrongdoing and previously said they had a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” supporting their position.

A club spokesperson said: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality.

“As such, Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the Club’s statement of February 2023.

“The Club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League Board and Executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has also insisted the club would not allow outside pressure to derail its progress, saying: “There are many who want to undermine the momentum of our club. We will not give them that opportunity.”
