Guardiola rejects Italy head coach offer

Pep Guardiola has turned down the opportunity to become Italy’s next head coach, opting instead to continue his planned break from football after leaving Manchester City this summer.

The decision comes days after Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Giovanni Malago confirmed talks had been held with the Spaniard and suggested financial exceptions could be made to secure his appointment.

Guardiola chooses break from football

The FIGC had hoped to convince Guardiola to take charge of the national team, offering him a lucrative salary package and significant control over the role.

However, the former Manchester City manager informed the federation that he intends to stick to his original plans of stepping away from the game to rest, spend more time with his family and travel.

Guardiola left City after a trophy-filled 10-year spell, ending one of the most successful managerial eras in the club’s history.

Italy turn to other candidates

Italy had initially approached Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti for the vacant position, according to FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini.

Ancelotti, a former Italy international, decided to remain with Brazil, forcing the federation to explore other options before Guardiola also declined the offer.

With both leading candidates unavailable, former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has emerged as the favourite for the role.

Pirlo, who currently manages Dubai-based United FC, could be tasked with leading Italy through a UEFA Nations League group featuring France, Belgium and Turkey before beginning the country’s qualification campaign for Euro 2028.

Italy have been searching for a new head coach after another disappointing period for the national team, having failed to qualify for the last three FIFA World Cups.

Guardiola’s rejection means the federation will have to continue its search for a manager capable of restoring one of international football’s traditional powerhouses to major tournament success.
