“For us, whether anybody likes it or not, Tinubu has done well” – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused opposition parties of refusing to acknowledge President Bola Tinubu’s performance because of their ambition to take over power in the 2027 general election.
Wike made the allegation on Tuesday, October 13, during his monthly media chat, where he argued that political differences should not stop opposition politicians from recognising achievements they believe could benefit the country.

Wike cites opposition’s political ambitions
The minister argued that some politicians were more concerned about winning elections than giving an objective assessment of Tinubu’s administration.
“For us, and whether anybody likes or not, we think Mr. President has done well,” Wike said.
“It’s just that opposition wants to take over power,” he added.
Wike also accused some political actors of adopting different positions at the national and state levels, saying they could support Tinubu nationally while opposing similar political arrangements in their states.
“I know that there are some time some people will come and probably look up, will support you at the national level, but at the sub-national level, forget it, because we believe that you should win at national level, but we have to take control over sub-national level,” he said.
‘It’s not fair to say Tinubu has done nothing’
Wike maintained that belonging to an opposition party should not be an excuse to dismiss the president’s performance without considering his administration’s record.
He insisted that political disagreements should not prevent leaders from acknowledging what they consider positive developments under the current government.
“You know, time has come, not because you’re an opposition party. And then you just say, the man who is in charge of affairs of the country has done nothing for the sake of, I mean, opposition, that’s not fair,” he said.
The minister also referred to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, whom he described as a member of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), claiming that the governor had acknowledged Tinubu’s performance despite their political differences.
Minister challenges opposition to tell Nigerians the truth
Wike further criticised the opposition’s handling of the debate surrounding Tinubu’s performance, arguing that its position could create the impression that the administration had achieved nothing.
He urged politicians in other parties who disagreed with such assessments to publicly express their views.
“But the way the opposition is going now is a bit of a sign to us. Oh, it’s okay, no, no, no, no, these people are not telling Nigeria the truth,” he said.
He added, “Let those of us who are also in other political parties tell Nigeria, no, this is not the truth, this is what is happening.”
Wike concluded by urging political actors to put the country’s interests above party loyalty when assessing the performance of public office holders.
“So the issue of Golsan, the issue of whatever you may call it, I’m not a party to read, but when you see something that will help your country, when you see somebody who is doing good, come out and say it,” he said.
