FIFA investigates alleged racist abuse involving IShowSpeed

FIFA has launched an investigation into allegations of racist abuse involving American content creator IShowSpeed during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

The incident allegedly took place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 3, where the popular streamer, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., attended the match and broadcast parts of the occasion live to millions of followers.

In a statement, football’s governing body confirmed it acted immediately after becoming aware of the alleged incident.

“The Fifa World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect,” Fifa said.

“It brings together people, cultures and communities from around the world and anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”

Video footage posted on IShowSpeed’s YouTube channel appears to show the 21-year-old, who was wearing a Cape Verde jersey, involved in a confrontation with an Argentina supporter inside the stadium.

Fifa did not provide further details about the alleged incident or identify any individuals involved, but said its investigation is ongoing.

Incident adds to tournament concerns

IShowSpeed has been a prominent figure throughout the World Cup, livestreaming matches and behind-the-scenes content to his massive online audience. He has more than 57 million YouTube subscribers and 53 million TikTok followers.

His broadcasts during the tournament have featured appearances from FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The latest incident comes just days after another racism controversy at the tournament involving France captain Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe condemned comments made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla following France’s victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16, describing her remarks as “despicable” and saying she was unworthy of holding public office.

The French Football Federation has since announced plans to pursue criminal charges against Amarilla, calling her comments “utterly abhorrent and unacceptable.”

FIFA has not indicated when the investigation into the alleged abuse of IShowSpeed is expected to be concluded.
