Ajayi scores historic goal as Hull stun Man United 2-0 on Premier League return

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi opened the scoring as newly promoted Hull City stunned Manchester United 2-0 in their first Premier League match after a nine-year absence.

The Nigeria international reacted quickest after United goalkeeper Senne Lammens parried Oli McBurnie’s effort onto the post, firing the rebound into the net to give Hull a deserved lead.

Ajayi ends Hull’s long wait for Premier League goal

Ajayi’s strike was Hull’s first Premier League goal since Sam Clucas scored against Tottenham in May 2017, shortly before the Tigers were relegated from the top flight.

The defender, who joined Hull after being released by West Bromwich Albion last summer, marked his return to the Premier League with a crucial contribution in front of the home supporters.

Manchester United, meanwhile, struggled to respond despite entering the campaign with optimism following their third-place finish last season under Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils also arrived with several new additions, but Hull’s organisation and intensity made life difficult for the visitors.

Mendy doubles Tigers’ advantage

Hull strengthened their position before half-time when club-record signing Nobel Mendy doubled the advantage in the 38th minute.

Regan Slater delivered a free-kick into the box and the Senegalese defender rose highest to power a header past Lammens on his competitive debut.

The result represents Hull’s first-ever Premier League victory over Manchester United and an impressive start to their return to the division.

Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis also played his part, making five saves to preserve Hull’s clean sheet, including a late stop to deny Bryan Mbeumo.

Hull secured promotion last season after beating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final, completing their return to the top flight after spending periods in both the Championship and League One.
