EPL: Chelsea reject third Manchester United bid for Mason Mount

Chelsea has reportedly rejected another offer from Manchester United for English football star, Mason Mount.

The offer of £50 million plus £5 million in add-ons for Mason Mount which was turned down by Chelsea, was the third bid from the Red Devils.

Chelsea has made a counter-proposal of £58m plus £7m in add-ons, and offered to meet United in person to try and come to a positive resolution.

The 24-year-old last played for the West Londoners in their Champions League quarter-final defeat against Real Madrid on April 18, with a hip injury bringing the player’s season to a premature end as his side finished 12th in the league standings.

Mount was also unable to be selected for European qualifiers as England faced off against Malta and North Macedonia this month, allowing Gareth Southgate to be more experimental in his use of Trent Alexander-Arnold in his midfield alongside Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson.

Though Mount has one year left on his existing contract at Stamford Bridge and is understood to be keen on a move to Erik ten Hag’s side, Chelsea are keen to get their full worth for the academy graduate.

It now remains to be seen how United will respond, given there had been warnings that the club’s third bid would be their final offer before moving on to other targets.

The third offer meant United increased their opening £40 million bid by £15 million and improved on their second £45 million, plus £5 million, offer, but it is still £10 million short of the £65 million Chelsea have altered their value to.

Allowing Mount to join United would put Chelsea on course to sell three key players to three different Premier League rivals.

Midfielder Mateo Kovacic is having medical tests ahead of his £30m move to Manchester City, while Kai Havertz is finalizing his switch to Arsenal that is worth just over £65 million.

While Chelsea needs to sell players, allowing three stars to join their rivals would be seen as a risk.

Mount has scored 33 goals in 195 appearances for Chelsea since making his first-team debut in 2019 and was a key part of their Champions League success in 2021.

He has also won the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup with Chelsea and has been capped 36 times for England.
