Eddie Howe set to leave Newcastle with immediate effect

Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, is expected to depart the club immediately, according to sources.

Howe faced criticism last season as Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League, losing 17 of their 38 games.

The 48-year-old’s final game in command was a 4-1 loss to Bristol City in a preseason friendly on Wednesday.

Well-placed sources have indicated that Howe has been surprised by the club’s transfer business so far this summer, despite being aware of the club’s need to sell players.

Earlier this year, Howe chose to stay at St James’ Park despite the inevitable sales, but his thoughts altered during the summer.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson stated in March that the club was “not having those conversations” regarding a management change “at the moment”.

Newcastle invested almost £240 million on new players a year ago, but Howe was angered by striker Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool.

 

Howe has lost two crucial players this summer: Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, while Arsenal is looking for captain Bruno Guimaraes.

 

Howe succeeded Steve Bruce as manager in November 2021 and ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic title by winning the 2025 Carabao Cup.

 

He led Newcastle to Champions League qualification in 2023 and 2025.

Last season, Newcastle reached the last 16 of the Champions League before losing 8-3 against on aggregate to Barcelona.

Their EFL Cup defence ended in the semi-finals, but their league performance was disappointing, placing fifth in 2024-25.

Newcastle won 84 of its 179 Premier League games under Howe, while drawing 38 and losing 57.

He supervised more Premier League victories than any other Newcastle manager. Only Kevin Keegan has a higher Premier League win percentage at the club than his 46.9%.
