Dowman, 16, becomes Premier League youngest goal scorer in Arsenal statement win vs Everton

Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history as Arsenal defeated Everton 2-0 in a dramatic late finish at the Emirates Stadium.

The 16-year-old sealed the victory in stoppage time after substitute Viktor Gyokeres had earlier broken Everton’s resistance with a late opener.

Arsenal leave it late

Everton had looked set to frustrate the league leaders for most of the contest, defending resolutely and creating chances of their own in the first half.

Dwight McNeil came closest for the visitors when his curling effort struck the post after he had earlier been denied by an acrobatic block from Riccardo Calafiori.

Arsenal also felt they should have been awarded a penalty when Michael Keane tangled with Kai Havertz inside the area, but the referee waved play on.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 89th minute when Gyokeres tapped home after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford misjudged a cross into the box.

Teenager sets Premier League record

Everton pushed forward in search of an equaliser and sent Pickford up for a late corner in stoppage time.

However, the move backfired as Dowman collected the ball, beat two defenders and raced clear before calmly rolling the ball into the empty net.

The goal sparked celebrations around the Emirates and secured all three points for Arsenal.

Dowman’s strike came at 16 years and 73 days old, breaking the long-standing record previously held by James Vaughan, who scored for Everton at 16 years and 270 days in 2005.

The victory moves Arsenal 10 points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, although the Gunners have played two games more than their closest challengers.
