“Don’t travel abroad with a cheating partner” — Man warns over relationships and migration

A man has sparked widespread debate online after sharing what he described as “honest advice” drawn from his personal travel experience, warning couples about the risks of unresolved relationship issues before relocation abroad.

His remarks, shared on social media, have generated discussions on trust, marriage, and cultural adjustment among migrants.

He explained that many relationships break down after relocation due to pre-existing issues being amplified by distance, financial pressure, and lifestyle changes, particularly among Nigerians moving to Europe and North America.

Relationship issues worsen after migration

My honest advice based on my travel experience: If you’ve caught your wife or girlfriend cheating and you’re planning to travel abroad, don’t travel with her. Unresolved issues will only get worse abroad. If you’re already abroad and considering marriage, don’t bring anyone from Nigeria. Many relationships struggle due to lifestyle, expectation, and value differences.”

Character and behaviour before relocation

Never marry a greedy or selfish person. Living abroad will amplify these traits, not hide them. If your partner is already showing disrespect, rejection when you ask for sex, or lack of affection while you’re still in Nigeria, don’t ignore it. Moving abroad won’t fix it, it often makes it worse. Character is everything before love, before travel plans, before marriage.”

His comments echo similar concerns raised in 2022 during migration surges, when relationship counsellors reported increased divorce rates among Nigerian couples abroad due to incompatibility and unresolved trust issues.
