Coventry climb out of relegation zone with statement win over Newcastle

Coventry City have announced their return to the Premier League with an emphatic 4-1 win over Newcastle United, ending a 25-year wait for a top-flight home win and strengthening their hopes of survival.

Jack Rudoni converted a penalty before Sidiki Cherif scored his first goal for the club, with Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni adding late strikes to complete a memorable evening for Frank Lampard’s side.

The result lifted Coventry to 14th in the table, level on points with Manchester United after six games and outside the relegation zone following successive league victories.

Lampard urges Coventry to build on form

Coventry last won a Premier League home match in 2001. Their latest victory provided a long-awaited moment for supporters and marked their first four-goal haul in the competition since beating Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 in May 2000.

The Sky Blues followed up their victory at Nottingham Forest before the international break with another impressive performance, responding to a difficult run of home results that included defeats to Hull City and Brighton, as well as a Carabao Cup loss to Aston Villa.

Lampard believes the victory can give his players the confidence needed to compete against established Premier League sides, but warned them against becoming complacent.

“It’s big and we have to tap into that in a good way, in a humble way,” he said.

“We have to be excited and I’m seeing players in my eyes that are developing quite quickly.”

The Coventry manager also acknowledged that facing top teams early in the campaign may have unsettled his relatively inexperienced squad.

“This gives good confidence, so it’s the balance of confidence against overconfidence. But it’s great when you have a template of feeling when you get a result of that level.”

Cherif makes his mark on Premier League stage

Teenager Cherif was one of the standout performers after earning his first Premier League start following his summer move from Fenerbahce. The 19-year-old won the early penalty before scoring a composed effort from outside the box.

At 19 years and 301 days, he became Coventry’s youngest Premier League goalscorer since Robbie Keane scored against Middlesbrough in April 2000.

Lampard praised the forward’s hunger and attitude, while encouraging him to learn from the chances he missed.

“Sometimes you don’t realise he’s 19. He’ll be disappointed with the one he missed and I’ve said to him it’s no problem because that’s good. You get there, you get hungry, you go again.”

He added: “There’s something about him I think is a bit special.”

With Hadji Wright sidelined by a serious thigh injury, Cherif could shoulder a significant share of Coventry’s goalscoring responsibility.

The Sky Blues now face a crucial run of fixtures, beginning with a trip to Tottenham before Fulham visit.
