Canada releases family sponsorship visa income requirements, figures start at ₦46m

Canada‘s federal immigration authority has released the minimum income requirements for people sponsoring their parents and grandparents under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), with the amount depending on family size.

According to the report on Canada.ca, the figures were set for the 2025 intake and cover the three tax years before the application. They remain relevant as Canada continues processing applications from the 2025 intake in 2026, while new PGP applications are currently paused.

Canada’s income requirements by family size

For sponsors outside Quebec, the required income figures for the three relevant tax years are:

2 people: $47,549, $44,530 and $43,082
3 people: $58,456, $54,743 and $52,965
4 people: $70,972, $66,466 and $64,306
5 people: $80,496, $75,384 and $72,935
6 people: $90,784, $85,020 and $82,259
7 people: $101,075, $94,658 and $91,582

The figures are listed for the 2024, 2023 and 2022 tax years, respectively.

For every additional person above seven, sponsors must add $10,291 for the third year, $9,636 for the second year and $9,324 for the first year.

Sponsors living in Quebec are subject to separate provincial income requirements.

How Canada calculates family size

Family size includes the sponsor, their spouse or common-law partner, dependent children and anyone still covered by an active sponsorship undertaking.

The principal applicant’s family members must also be counted, even if they are not travelling to Canada or already hold Canadian permanent residency or citizenship.

How sponsors prove their income

Sponsors must provide their Notice of Assessment (NOA) from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for each of the three relevant tax years.

They can authorise immigration officials to obtain their tax information directly from the CRA or submit copies of their Notices of Assessment with the required sponsorship forms.

Those without physical copies of their assessments can access their tax information through the CRA’s online My Account portal.

Canada’s 2026 policy has paused new PGP applications, while applications from the previous intake continue to be processed.
