Canada lists 2 key skills immigrants need to secure better jobs
The Canadian government has highlighted two key skills immigrants can develop to improve their chances of securing better jobs and settling more easily in the country.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has continued to emphasise the importance of strong language abilities, particularly as newcomers seek employment and adjust to life in Canada. The department identifies English and French proficiency as important tools for accessing jobs, services and communities.

According to IRCC, immigrants should focus on the following:
- English language skills: Strong English can help newcomers communicate effectively, access services and compete for employment opportunities, particularly in areas where English is widely spoken.
- French language skills: Learning or improving French can expand opportunities, particularly for people living in French-speaking communities. IRCC also notes that knowing both official languages can be an advantage when looking for work and participating in Canadian society.
The department explained that immigrants who already speak one of Canada’s official languages can consider learning the other to broaden their opportunities.
IRCC also recommends language classes and bridging programmes that combine language training with work experience. Such programmes can help newcomers improve workplace communication while gaining Canadian work exposure.
Eligible permanent residents and protected persons can also access government-funded language classes through programmes such as Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and Cours de langue pour les immigrants au Canada (CLIC).
The guidance comes as Canada continues to provide settlement services designed to help newcomers overcome language and employment barriers and integrate into the labour market.
