Boniface ends Bremen loan, returns to Leverkusen for injury recovery

Victor Boniface has returned to Bayer Leverkusen to begin his rehabilitation programme after undergoing knee surgery, bringing his short loan spell at Werder Bremen to an early end.
The Super Eagles striker is expected to miss the remainder of the 2025/26 Bundesliga season as he focuses on recovery, dealing another setback in a career that has been repeatedly disrupted by serious knee injuries.
Surgery ends Bremen loan early
Boniface, who joined Werder Bremen on loan earlier this season, underwent surgery on January 10 to address persistent issues in his right knee. The decision followed months of discomfort that limited his involvement and effectiveness at the club.
The 25-year-old’s knee problems are long-standing, with his medical history including two cruciate ligament tears suffered in 2019.

Those injuries have continued to resurface, prompting both Bremen and parent club Leverkusen to prioritise a long-term solution over short-term availability.
As a result, the striker’s loan spell has effectively ended, with Bremen now planning the rest of their campaign without him.
Focus shifts to long-term fitness
Boniface has since reported back to Bayer Leverkusen, where he will complete his rehabilitation under the club’s medical staff.
In a post shared on Snapchat, the forward showed images from Leverkusen’s training facility, confirming the start of his recovery process.
The club are expected to closely monitor his progress over the coming months, with no rush placed on his return given the severity and recurrence of his injury issues.
Boniface has previously been an important player at both club and international level, and Leverkusen remain hopeful he can return fully fit for the next season.
