Bayer Leverkusen optimistic about Boniface comeback after pre-season brace
Victor Boniface has received a vote of confidence from Bayer Leverkusen after scoring twice in his return to action during the club’s recent 7-0 pre-season victory over fifth-tier side Sportfreunde Baumberg.
The Nigerian striker struck twice in the space of four minutes, ending a lengthy scoring drought after failing to find the net for the Bundesliga club since March 2025.
Although the match was only a pre-season friendly, it marked a positive comeback for the 25-year-old following a difficult spell dominated by injuries and fitness concerns.
Boniface reflects on difficult year
Boniface endured an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign, spending long periods sidelined with knee problems and struggling for regular football during a loan spell at Werder Bremen.
Speaking after the match, the Super Eagles forward admitted returning to the pitch meant more than the goals themselves.
“I’m doing well. I’m happy.”
Boniface said simply being back in training and playing regularly had lifted his spirits after months of frustration.
“Of course, I’m happy to be training again, playing again, and doing what I love again. It’s been a difficult year for me. It’s a good feeling to be back.”
When asked if he was close to regaining his best form, the striker remained cautious.
“I can’t say. For me, it’s about continuing.”
Leverkusen urge patience
Despite Boniface’s encouraging performance, Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martínez insisted the club would not rush his recovery.
“For Boni, it’s important to improve physically and train with the group.”
The Spaniard also believes the striker’s brace will boost his confidence.
“The most important thing is that he’s a bit happier about the goals.”
Sporting director Simon Rolfes echoed that message, describing Boniface’s performance as an encouraging step after what he called a “really difficult year overall.”
Rolfes added that the Nigerian is “in much better shape than in March and April” but stressed that more time will be needed before he returns to his previous level.
Boniface remains under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2028. While his future has been the subject of transfer speculation, the Bundesliga club appears focused on helping him regain full fitness ahead of the 2026/27 season, where he will compete with Patrik Schick and rising youngster Christian Kofane for a place in the starting lineup.
