Barcelona eye Chelsea forward as backup striker

Barcelona are exploring alternative attacking options ahead of the summer transfer window, with Joao Pedro emerging as a potential fallback if a move for Julian Alvarez proves unattainable.

The Catalan club are actively planning for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, whose role as first-choice striker is increasingly uncertain heading into next season.

Pedro enters shortlist

Reports indicate that Barcelona have added Pedro to their shortlist following an impressive debut campaign at Chelsea.

The 24-year-old forward has delivered 19 goals and nine assists in 46 appearances, highlighting his attacking output and adaptability across multiple forward roles.

His profile aligns with Barcelona’s current recruitment strategy – a mobile, technically capable forward who can link play while maintaining goal threat.

Pedro’s versatility is viewed internally as a key asset, particularly in a system that demands fluid movement across the front line.

However, any potential deal is expected to be financially complex. Chelsea signed Pedro for €63.7m, and with a long-term contract in place, the Premier League club are unlikely to sanction a sale without a significant premium.

Alvarez remains priority target

Barcelona’s primary objective remains Alvarez, currently at Atletico Madrid. The Argentine is seen as the ideal long-term replacement due to his proven quality at the highest level and tactical intelligence.

Should that deal fail, alternative options are already under consideration. Lautaro Martinez, who has long been admired by the club, remains on the radar, although his importance to Inter Milan and contract running until 2029 make negotiations difficult.

Other previously linked names, including younger prospects, appear to have dropped in priority as Barcelona focus on established forwards capable of immediate impact.

Financial constraints will ultimately shape any move by the club. While internal confidence remains that a major signing is achievable, any deal for Pedro or Martínez would likely require an outlay closer to €100m.
