AfroBasket 2025: Okonkwo named tournament MVP again

Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo has been crowned the Most Valuable Player of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, marking a dominant individual and team performance in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The 28-year-old forward was crucial in D’Tigress’ march to glory, helping Nigeria clinch a 78-64 win over Mali in Sunday night’s final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville.
The latest win marks Nigeria’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and their seventh overall, proving their dominance of the sport on the continent under head coach Rena Wakama.
Okonkwo, who also won the MVP award at the 2023 edition in Rwanda, becomes only the second Nigerian player to claim back-to-back MVP honours at the tournament, after Mfon Udoka’s feat in 2003 and 2005.
Her consistency, leadership, and scoring ability were central to Nigeria’s unbeaten run throughout the championship.
