AFCON 2025: Bassey backs Fredrick recovery, points to attacking chemistry

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has voiced confidence in Benjamin Fredrick’s recovery from injury, insisting the centre-back remains firmly in Nigeria’s long-term plans despite missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Fredrick was ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a knee injury in training with Belgian side FCV Dender EH, a setback that narrowed Nigeria’s defensive options ahead of the competition.

Speaking at a pre-match media engagement, Bassey said he had not been in direct contact with the injured defender but expressed belief in his ability to return stronger.

“I haven’t spoken to him, but it will be amazing for him to showcase his talent on this stage. I wish him a speedy recovery and I hope he will be back with us next year,” he said.

Focus remains forward despite pressure

Bassey also addressed the broader pressure surrounding the Super Eagles following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the squad is determined to move on.

“We play every game trying to give our actual best. Sometimes it is God’s will and sometimes it is not,” he said.

“We can’t really focus on the past, we have to focus on the future. There will always be pressure on Nigeria, from ourselves and from the country, but we need to focus on what we have to do.”

Iwobi, Chukwueze understanding highlighted

On the pitch, Bassey pointed to the growing cohesion among Nigeria’s attacking players, singling out his long-standing relationship with Alex Iwobi and the influence of other forwards.

“We have been playing with each other for a long time now. Alex and I have a great understanding, we know each other’s strengths, and we can bring that to the team. Chukwueze also,” he added.

Nigeria open their AFCON campaign on Tuesday against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium, with head coach Eric Chelle targeting a strong start to boost the team’s prospects of progressing from the group stage.
