Goldie Jeanne Hawn was born in Washington, D.C., to Laura, a jewellery shop/dance school owner, and Edward Rutledge Hawn, a pianist and conductor who was a descendant of Edward Rutledge, the youngest contributor to the Declaration of Independence.

Her father was a Presbyterian of German and English ancestry. Her mother was Jewish and the daughter of Jewish immigrants from Hungary. Hawn was raised Jewish in Takoma Park, Maryland, and attended Montgomery Blair High School in adjacent Silver Spring, Maryland.

Hawn grew up in Maryland and began dancing lessons at the age of three. After graduating from high school, she attended American University to study drama and teach dance.

Career

She began her career as a dancer, first appearing in chorus lines at summer stock theatres and then as a go-go dancer in discotheques. After an agent noticed her in a chorus line in a 1967 television special, she was cast as the crazy neighbour in the sitcom Good Morning, World, which ran from 1967 to 1968.

Before her blockbuster appearance on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In (1968-70), Hawn had a brief role in the Disney classic comedy The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band.

During her time on that show, Hawn also played the free-spirited girlfriend of a dentist (Walter Matthau) in Cactus Flower (1969), a cinematic adaptation of a well-known stage farce. While the film received mixed reviews, her performance was lauded, and she won both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best supporting actress.

Hawn had comparable roles in the comedy There’s a Girl in My Soup (1970, opposite Peter Sellers) and the caper picture $ (1971, with Warren Beatty), and she costarred with Edward Albert in the 1972 film adaptation of the play Butterflies Are Free.

In 1975, Hawn co-starred with Beatty and Julie Christie in the hit sex comedy Shampoo. She produced and acted in her most well-known picture, Private Benjamin (1980), for which she received an Oscar nomination for best actress.

Hawn’s later films included Swing Shift (1984), with Kurt Russell, who became her long-time companion; Bird on a Wire (1990), with Mel Gibson; Housesitter (1992), with Steve Martin; Robert Zemeckis’ dark comedy Death Becomes Her (1992), with Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis; and The First Wives Club (1996), with Bette Midler and Diane Keaton.

Hawn co-starred opposite Susan Sarandon as a middle-aged groupie in The Banger Sisters (2002), and she returned to the screen after a long absence to play Amy Schumer’s mother in Snatched (2017).

In The Christmas Chronicles (2018) and its sequel (2020), Hawn and Russell played Mrs. Claus and Santa Claus, respectively.

Goldie Hawn Husband

Hawn’s pre-fame boyfriends were actor Mark Goddard and musician Spiro Venduras. Her first spouse was dancer (later director) Gus Trikonis, who played a Shark gang member in West Side Story.

They got married on May 16, 1969, and separated on April 9, 1973. Hawn then dated stuntman Ted Grossman, Swedish actor Bruno Wintzell, and Italian actor Franco Nero, but she did not file for divorce from Trikonis until New Year’s Eve 1975, after becoming engaged to musician Bill Hudson of the Hudson Brothers, whom she had met on a first-class flight from New York to Los Angeles the previous summer.

Hawn obtained a divorce in June 1976 and married Hudson on July 3 in Takoma Park, Maryland, where she grew up. They have two children: Oliver (born September 7, 1976) and Kate (born April 19, 1979).

Hudson filed for divorce on August 15, 1980. Hawn later had relationships with Yves Rénier, a French actor, and Victor Drai, a Moroccan businessman. The divorce from Hudson was finalised in March 1982.

Hawn has been in a relationship with Kurt Russell since Valentine’s Day 1983. The couple first met when filming The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1967, but became romantic after reconnecting on the set of Swing Shift.

They have a son named Wyatt (born July 10, 1986). In 2000 and 2004, news sites reported that Hawn and Russell were on the verge of splitting up. During the alleged separations, Hawn was linked to journalist Charles Glass and Pakistani former cricketer and Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Hawn and Russell, who will mark 40 years together in 2023, have properties in British Columbia, Canada (Vancouver), Colorado (Snowmass), New York (Manhattan), and California (Santa Ynez Valley, Brentwood, and Palm Desert).
