Club World Cup shock: Al-Hilal eliminate Manchester City in 4-3 extra-time thriller

Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal pulled off one of the biggest upset of the FIFA Club World Cup so far, defeating Manchester City 4-3 after extra time in a pulsating round-of-16 clash.

Despite taking an early lead through Bernardo Silva, City were unable to contain Al Hilal’s counter-attacks, with Marcos Leonardo and Malcom inspiring the comeback.

Erling Haaland briefly restored parity with a powerful strike before the game stretched into extra time.

Kalidou Koulibaly headed Al Hilal in front again before Phil Foden levelled for City.

However, Leonardo sealed his brace in the 112th minute, capitalizing on another defensive lapse to secure a famous win and send Pep Guardiola’s side crashing out of the competition.

City’s early exit marks the second major upset of the tournament and puts Al Hilal into the quarter-finals, where they will face Fluminense, who pulled the first upset against Inter Milan.
