2027: Makinde drops earlier running mate, picks former DSS boss Lawal Daura
Allied People’s Movement (APM) presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has picked former Department of State Services (DSS) Director General, Lawal Daura, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde announced Daura’s selection at the APM elective national convention held at the Rilwanu Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi.

Daura replaces Ibrahim Bala, who was earlier unveiled as Makinde’s running mate but was reportedly intended to serve as a placeholder.
The former DSS boss joined the APM days ago after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following his loss in the Katsina governorship primary.
Why Makinde picked Daura
Explaining the decision, Makinde said Daura was deliberately selected because of the need to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
The development places security among the major issues expected to shape the APM’s campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
At the convention, Yusuf Dantalle was also re-elected as the national chairman of the APM.
Makinde told party members that the opposition’s responsibility ahead of 2027 went beyond simply defeating the ruling party at the polls.
Makinde speaks on 2027 election
Makinde said, “As we approach 2027, therefore, I believe the task before all of us is bigger than winning an election. It is to give Nigerians a real choice about the future of their country.”
He stressed the importance of presenting Nigerians with measurable plans and records showing how an alternative government could improve their lives.
The choice of Daura is expected to draw attention as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election, with security likely to remain a major concern for voters.
