“You’re backsliding”: Man shares mother’s response over non-payment of tithes
A Nigerian man living in the United Kingdom UK has sparked a family debate after he stopped sending tithes to his home church, citing differences in religious practices abroad.
In a heartfelt message shared online, he explained that while he faithfully paid his monthly tithe in Nigeria, his contributions significantly reduced after moving to the UK.
“When I got here, I sent tithe to my home church about twice, then stopped,” he said.
He revealed that his mother called to question his decision.
He responded by highlighting the different approach to giving in the UK, where tithing is not compulsory and many churches focus on offering as a voluntary act.
He also pointed out that many churches provide practical support, such as free meals every Sunday for those in need.
Reflecting on his experience in Nigeria, he questioned the impact of his past tithes: “All the tithe we paid in church in Nigeria — where did it go?
“There was never a time we had food for the poor or a room where food was kept. Isn’t that the essence of tithe?”
His mother’s reaction was blunt: “You are backsliding.”
