He is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was the Attorney General of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007.

Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo, also known as Yemi Osinbajo, was born on March 8, 1957, at the Creek Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria. He was raised in Lagos by a middle-class Christian family. His parents were educated and instilled in him positive morals.

He grew up with his family, went to church, and learnt early on the value of honesty, kindness, and service. As a child, Yemi attended Corona Primary School in Lagos.

Following that, he attended Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos, from 1969 to 1975. He excelled academically in Igbobi College and received numerous awards in subjects such as history, literature, and public speaking.

For example, he received the “State Merit Award” in 1971, and the Senior Student Prize for English Oratory in 1972, and several other awards until 1975.

Osinbajo was schooled at Corona Primary School in Lagos. From 1969 to 1975, he attended Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos, where he received the following awards: the State Merit Award (1971), the School Prize for English Oratory (1972), the Adeoba Prize for English Oratory (1972-1975), the Elias Prize for Best Performance in History (WASC, 1973), the School Prize for Literature (HSC, 1975), and the African Statesman Intercollegiate Best Speaker’s Prize (1974).

He then pursued his undergraduate degree at the University of Lagos from 1975 to 1978, graduating with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in Law. In addition, he received the Graham-Douglas Prize for Commercial Law.

In 1979, he finished the obligatory one-year professional training at the Nigerian Law School and was admitted to practise as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Yemi Osibanjo Career

Yemi served as a legal officer for the Bendel Development and Planning Authority in the erstwhile Bendel State from 1979 to 1980 as part of his National Youth Service. He began teaching law at the University of Lagos in 1981, when he was only 24 years old.

He was promoted over the years, eventually becoming a Senior Lecturer at the institution from 1983 to 1986. He later worked as Senior Special Adviser on Litigation to Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Bola Ajibola, from 1988 until 1992.

Yemi Osinbajo was appointed Professor of Law in 1997, focussing in evidence law, and directed the University of Lagos’ Department of Public Law until 1999.

In 1999, Yemi Osinbajo was appointed Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos State under Governor Bola Tinubu. He served until 2007. In this post, he oversaw numerous reforms, including efforts to enhance Lagos courts, the establishment of the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) to assist low-income individuals in obtaining justice, and the establishment of the individuals Mediation Centre (CMC) to resolve conflicts outside of court.

These reforms benefited many people and generated $1 billion in revenue for Lagos State through improved land register systems. In 2013, Yemi Osinbajo helped organise the All Progressives Congress (APC) and produced its manifesto, known as the “Roadmap to a New Nigeria”. This plan included things like free school lunches and cash support for poor families.

In 2015, he became Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate on the APC ticket. On May 29, 2015, Yemi Osinbajo was sworn in as Vice-President of Nigeria, following their election victory. He was re-elected in 2019 and will serve until May 29, 2023.

As Vice-President, he oversaw economic planning and implemented programs such as N-Power and TraderMoni to assist youth and small traders. These programs trained hundreds of thousands of young people and provided loans to numerous traders.

When President Buhari was away for medical reasons, Osinbajo served as Acting President, implementing policies such as mandating oil corporations to relocate their headquarters to Niger Delta states to benefit local communities.

He also helped Nigeria recover from the recession, increasing GDP by approximately 2% after 2016, and attracting billions of dollars in international investment, including backing from Microsoft.

Yemi Osinbajo Wife

Yemi Osinbajo married Dolapo Osinbajo (née Soyode). They got married on November 25, 1989. Dolapo is the granddaughter of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s founders.

They have three children, two daughters and one son: Kiki (Olukonyinsola), Kanyinsola, and Fiyinfoluwa Osinbajo.

Yemi is also an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). He is the leader of Province 48, also known as Olive Tree, located in Ikoyi, Lagos. Despite being Vice President, he continued to serve as a preacher, referring to his government duty as a “loan” from God.
