Yakubu Dogara CFR (born December 26, 1967) is a Nigerian politician and lawyer who served as the 14th Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives in Abuja. From 2007 until 2023, he represented Bauchi State’s Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa Balewa Federal seat in the House of Representatives.

Yakubu Dogara was born to Yakubu Ganawuri and Saratu Yakubu on December 26, 1967. After graduating in 1982, he attended Bauchi Teachers’ College for secondary education, earning a Grade II Teachers’ Certificate in 1987.
Dogara attended the Nigerian Law School’s Lagos campus from 1992 to 1993, and he was admitted to the bar that year. He later earned a Master’s (LLM) in International Commercial Law from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland.
In October 2016, after becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives, he attended a transformational leadership course at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
Career
He held this position until 2006, when he decided to run for the Federal House of Representatives in the Bogoro, Dass, and Tafawa Balewa constituencies.
He was re-elected to the House in 2011 and 2015 (on the All Progressive Congress, APC) platform. After winning the contest, he presented a legislative agenda to the Eighth House, which would serve as its guiding document for the next four years.
Hon. Dogara also took a course on managing and leading strategic change in 2006, a negotiation course at Oxford University in 2013, and a crisis leadership course at Harvard Kennedy School in 2014.
In October 2016, after becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives, he attended a transformative leadership school at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
Hon. Dogara is a member of several associations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the Nigerian Institute of Management, the Chartered Institute of Mediators and Conciliators, the Cyber Bar Association, and the Social Policy Association.
He also holds associate memberships in the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and the World Jurist Association.
Awards and Recognition
In 2015, he was named the Politician of the Year by the Leadership Newspaper. In March 2016, the Royal Commonwealth Society of Nigeria recognised him for passing 130 laws in one day, and on June 10, 2016, he received the Zik Prize in Leadership Award for Public Service.
He was also selected Political Icon of the Year 2016 by the Sun Newspaper’s Editorial Board, and Politician of the Year by City People Magazine during their 2017 awards ceremony.
Dogara received the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), a Nigerian national accolade, from President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2022.

Dogara is married to Gimbiya Yakubu Dogara, and the pair has two children, including Chimel Dogara, who was named student of the week in November 2015 at Abbey College of Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.
