“Women have always been transactional” – Omawumi sparks debate on modern relationships

Nigerian singer Omawumi has shared her thoughts on how relationships have always involved some level of exchange, while noting that the dynamics have changed over time.
Speaking during a recent interview on Pulse, she explained that transactional behaviour in relationships is not new, as even in the past, couples expressed affection through simple gestures like gifts and outings.
“Women have been transactional since the beginning of time. But our transactional was different from what the younger generation thinks it is today,” she said.
She explained that in earlier years, acts such as buying ice cream, popcorn, or going on casual outings were enough expressions of love and affection.
However, she noted that modern expectations have shifted, with more material demands becoming common compared to the past.
“But now it’s iPhone. There’s always been some level of transactional. If you are feeling somebody, you take them out, buy them things,” she added.
Omawumi also stressed the importance of balance, stating that in her own relationships, she tries to reciprocate when a partner shows generosity.
She noted that relationships should not be one-sided, as mutual effort and appreciation play a key role in sustaining a healthy connection.
“If I’m with a man that showers gifts on me, I always try to match that energy. But most people don’t see that. They only see women on the collecting end,” she concluded.
