Woman seeks divorce over husband’s N150k monthly allowance to mother
A Lagos-based woman has stirred widespread reactions online after revealing that her husband allegedly paid his mother a monthly allowance of N150,000 for four years while the family struggled financially.
The woman shared her ordeal in a message addressed to a lawyer, saying she felt betrayed and overwhelmed after discovering the payments through a bank notification on her husband’s phone.
Discovery Sparks Family Crisis
According to her account, the couple have been married for four years and live in Gbagada, Lagos. She said their finances have remained strained throughout the marriage.
She claimed they often borrowed from local savings groups, known as “ajo,” or took loans to complete their annual rent.
The woman said she made several personal sacrifices to support the family. She noted that she had not changed her hairstyle in three months and rarely bought new clothes to save money for their toddler’s school fees.
Her shock came when she reportedly saw a standing order of N150,000 on her husband’s phone, labelled “Mama’s Allowance.”
She said the transfer had been consistent every month for four years without fail. By her calculation, the payments amount to nearly N2 million annually.
Husband Defends Support for Mother
When confronted, the husband reportedly defended his actions.
According to the woman, he told her: “I am the first son, her blessings are why I even have a job.”
She said he accused her of being “bitter” after she described the arrangement as financial infidelity.
The woman disclosed that she has temporarily moved to her sister’s house as tensions escalated. She also questioned whether seeking a divorce would be justified, stating that she feels “married to him AND his mother.”
