WSL: Chelsea return to winning ways with 2-0 victory over Spurs

Chelsea reignited their Women’s Super League campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday, easing pressure after back-to-back league defeats and moving back into the Champions League qualification places.

Goals from Keira Walsh and Alyssa Thompson ensured the reigning champions capitalised on Arsenal’s surprise win over Manchester City, lifting the Blues into third place with seven matches remaining.

Spurs threaten but lack cutting edge

Tottenham, enjoying an impressive first season under Martin Ho, entered the contest just a point behind Chelsea and started with confidence.

The hosts dominated large spells of the first half and created the clearer chances, most notably when Olivia Holdt struck the crossbar with a fine effort.

Despite their positive play, Spurs failed to convert pressure into goals, a shortcoming Chelsea would ruthlessly exploit.

Walsh strike shifts things

Six minutes before the interval, Chelsea delivered a decisive blow. Walsh struck a clean half-volley from the edge of the area, firing through a crowded box and beyond goalkeeper Lize Kop to give the visitors an against-the-run-of-play lead.

The goal sparked visible relief on the Chelsea bench, particularly for head coach Sonia Bompastor, who had faced criticism following last week’s heavy defeat to Manchester City.

Thompson seals it after the break

Any Spurs hopes evaporated early in the second half. Five minutes after the restart, Alyssa Thompson finished emphatically to double Chelsea’s advantage and place the result firmly under their control.

While Cathinka Tandberg later missed a clear opportunity to reduce the deficit, Chelsea managed the game efficiently, showing more composure on the ball.

Statement win in top-three race

The victory comes just days after Chelsea confirmed Bompastor’s contract extension until 2030, showing long-term confidence in her leadership.
