With Peter Obi, any party already has 40% votes in the bag – PDP Chieftain

A top member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has said former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would give any party a huge electoral boost if he rejoined them ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ulasi, who spoke during an interview on Arise Television, stressed that Obi’s political influence still cuts across Nigeria, especially among young voters.

He described Obi as a credible figure whose support base remains one of the strongest in the country.

Obi’s credibility seen as a game-changer

According to Ulasi, Obi’s return to the PDP would instantly lift the party’s chances of winning the next presidential election. He argued that Obi commands nationwide trust, which is rare in Nigeria’s current political climate.

He said any political platform that embraces Obi can almost be certain of securing between 30% to 40% of votes, even before campaigning begins. Ulasi added that the former Anambra State governor’s clean reputation has remained a major selling point.

The PDP stalwart also noted that Obi’s style of politics, which appeals to young Nigerians and professionals, would help rejuvenate the party’s image and widen its reach.

Calls for fairness in zoning

Ulasi further used the opportunity to speak about zoning ahead of the 2027 elections. He maintained that the PDP has already agreed to zone its ticket to the South, but he believes it should go a step further.

According to him, fairness demands that the presidential ticket be “micro-zoned” to the South-East, which remains the only region yet to produce a president since Nigeria’s return to democracy.

He stressed that such a move would not only be just but also strengthen the party’s appeal in the South-East, where feelings of political exclusion remain strong.

PDP’s road to rebuilding

Speaking on the current state of the PDP, Ulasi revealed that the party has started reorganising itself after internal divisions weakened its performance in 2023. He said recent meetings with governors and party leaders show that unity is gradually being restored.

He emphasised that the PDP is determined to rebuild trust among Nigerians by presenting itself as a more disciplined and credible opposition. Ulasi said Obi’s involvement, if it happens, would fast-track this rebuilding process.

The veteran politician concluded that the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Obi makes a return to the PDP or chooses another political path before 2027.
