“Why the segregation?” – Man fumes as Abuja company limits job applications to ‘only’ 11 universities

A job advert by an Abuja-based company has sparked outrage online after it restricted applications to graduates from only 11 Nigerian universities, sidelining thousands of other graduates across the country.

Recruiter Slams Company Over Discriminatory Policy

Emmanuel Bassey, a Nigerian recruiter, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his disappointment at the advert, calling it “pure discrimination” and “unfair.”

He questioned why the company would exclude graduates from other universities, emphasizing that a university’s name does not guarantee competence.

“Why the segregation? Why should graduates from other universities be sidelined from applying? A university name doesn’t guarantee competence. It’s your results that do,” Emmanuel tweeted. He further added, “Strong companies test skills. Weak ones hide behind labels. If you can’t assess competence without a school label on a jobseeker, that’s a hiring problem, not a candidate problem.”

Job Requirements

According to the advert, the company seeks applicants with first-class or second-class honours in fields such as Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting.

Additionally, candidates must be under 24 years old, fluent in English, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Only 11 Universities Eligible

The 11 universities listed by the company as eligible for the job applications are Covenant University, Babcock University, Landmark University, Afe Babalola University, Pan-Atlantic University, University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, University of Benin, Redeemer’s University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

This exclusion left graduates from other accredited Nigerian universities unable to apply, fueling backlash online.
