Why I want to be California governor in 2026 – Nigerian-American

A Nigerian-American mathematician and educator, Dr Akinyemi Agbede, has formally announced his intention to contest the 2026 California governorship election, presenting a vision anchored on service, reform and inclusive progress.
Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, Dr Agbede said he is motivated by a desire to offer evidence-based leadership that prioritises fairness and opportunity for all residents.
He said: “I want to lead California because I believe evidence-driven leadership, fairness and opportunity should define our future. This state deserves thoughtful solutions anchored in integrity and innovation.”
Focus on Reform and Inclusive Development
Dr Agbede, who holds a PhD in Mathematical Analysis from the University of Cambridge, noted that he has spent several decades advancing STEM education and pushing for policies that improve access for under-represented communities.
He explained that his campaign would focus on educational reform, economic development, technological growth and social justice, which he described as critical pillars for strengthening California’s long-term competitiveness.
He added: “California stands at a crossroads. We need leaders prepared to confront complex challenges with analytical clarity and a genuine commitment to every community, not just a privileged few.”
Campaign Rooted in Service
Dr Agbede stressed that his ambition is driven by public service rather than personal interest.
“This campaign is about ensuring every Californian, regardless of background, has the chance to thrive. Together, we can build a fairer, more innovative and more inclusive California,” he said.
