“Why are churches judged more than secular gatherings?” — Apostle Iren addresses double standards
Apostle Emmanuel Iren has criticised what he described as the double standard in how public gatherings are perceived in Nigeria, comparing reactions to religious events with secular or sporting occasions.
Speaking during a recent sermon, he highlighted the scrutiny churches face in holding large gatherings, especially during open-air events.
According to Apostle Iren, while secular artists and football players can attract thousands of fans with little criticism, churches are often judged harshly for similar assemblies, particularly when weather conditions, such as rain, do not deter attendees.
Churches vs secular events
“They watch us whenever we gather in large numbers to pray. But when a secular artist gathers the same crowd, nobody says anything,” Apostle Iren said.
“When football players are on the pitch with thousands of fans in the rain and everyone is drenched, it’s seen as normal.”
Public perception and criticism
He further emphasised the societal reaction to church events: “But let a church hold an open-air crusade and rain starts falling while people stay — you won’t hear the end of it. Suddenly, people will start saying, ‘If you people used this same energy for the government, the country would be better.’”
Advocacy for fair treatment
Apostle Iren urged for a more balanced perspective, stressing that religious gatherings should not be unfairly targeted while secular and sporting events continue without criticism.
He called on the public to respect the rights of churches to organise events that bring communities together.
