What Was the Cause of Death for ‘1000-lb. Sisters’ Tammy and Amy’s Cousin, Katie Slaton?

When Tammy Slaton and Amy Slaton-Halterman of 1000-lb. Sisters make headlines, it’s either because of their inter-family turmoil or their dramatic weight loss. Unfortunately for the Slaton family, August 2025 brought some headline-making news of another kind.

Their sister, Amanda Halterman, shared the devastating news on Instagram that their cousin, Katie Slaton, had died. Here’s what we know about her cause of death as the family begins the arduous process of mourning her loss.

Katie has been sick for quite some time, according to a GoFundMe page set up by her family. Katie was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer in January 2025, which prompted the creation of the contribution page.

On January 25, 2025, the family expressed gratitude to those who had donated, stating, “Your kindness and compassion mean the world to Katie and her family.” Whether you gave, shared the fundraiser, or provided words of encouragement, you are a part of this remarkable adventure.

In March, there was another report, indicating that her continuous battle remained and that the expenditures of cancer treatment increased. And on August 25, 2025, Amanda took to Instagram to request immediate assistance for Katie, stating, “Please whisper a prayer for our family as we continue to support Katie Slaton.” I am grateful to be able to stand by your side.

On August 26, 2025, Amanda made the devastating announcement that Katie had lost her long and difficult battle. She commented, “I’m posting this with a completely crushed heart and spirit.” “My little cousin went to sit at Jesus’ feet yesterday.”

Although Amanda did not specify Katie’s cause of death, and it is unclear what type of cancer she was fighting, it appears likely that it was either the cancer itself or a consequence of therapy.

Katie’s loved ones are mourning her death, and admirers have offered their deepest sympathies. Amanda’s statement regarding their cousin’s death went on to say, “She was a force to be reckoned with, demonstrating welcoming and freely offered love. She was the life of the party and my closest friend.

“I know our grandparents and friends were there to welcome you home. Please pray for my aunt, uncle, and cousins, but especially for the babies and Natalie to be strong.”

Here is how the family recalled Katie.

In her tribute, Amanda referred to Katie as “the life of the party and my best friend.” She said, “I know our grandparents and friends were there to welcome you home. Please pray for my aunt, uncle, and cousins, but especially for the babies and Natalie to be strong.”

The family also thanked fans for their support throughout Katie’s cancer fight. Amanda wrote, “Thank you to everyone who came out to support her.”

Katie made an appearance on 1000-Lb Sisters, most notably in Season 5, when Tammy was discharged from a weight reduction rehab program. The TLC series, which follows Tammy and Amy’s problems with obesity, has been airing since 2020.
